WASHINGTON, DC -- George Washington basketball coach Karl Hobbs has announced that Robert Diggs and Montrell McDonald have signed national letters-of-intent to attend GW next fall. They are GW's first signees for 2005-06.
Diggs, a 6-foot-8, 180-pound forward from Gwynn Park High School in nearby Brandywine, MD, averaged 15.6 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks last season for the Yellow Jackets as a junior under coach Steve Matthews. He was rated the No. 1 wing forward in the state of Maryland by Marylandprephoops.com.
"He's a GW-type of player," said Matthews. "He has lots of energy and he fits their system and their system fits him."
"We feel like we're getting one of the top five players in the area in Robert Diggs," Hobbs said. "He is a terrific shooter for a guy his size and he has a willingness to want to be the best. His best days are ahead of him."
McDonald, a 6-7 guard/forward from Fort Worth, TX, is attending Bridgton Academy in Maine. He graduated from O.D. Wyatt High School in Fort Worth where he averaged 20 points, 12 rebounds, 4.5 blocks an four assists as a senior last year. McDonald was named first team All-District and All-County as well as District Defensive Player of the Year.
"He is very athletic and a fierce competitor who runs the court well and is a big-time player," said Vonzell Thomas, his AAU coach for Team Fort Worth. Bridgton Academy coach Whit Lesure says McDonald "is well-suited to the up-tempo style that GW plays."
"Montrell is a lefty with tremendous skills," Hobbs said. "He can play multiple positions because of his ability to handle the ball and create plays not only for himself but for his teammates. He is really competitive and will be one of the best athletes to ever play at this school."
