Women's Tennis Impressive at Georgetown Invitational

WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington University junior Anastasia Skavronskaia (Miami, FL) finished runner-up in Flight A singles action, while sophomore Leah Woodard (Wellesley, MA) finished first in Flight C singles to lead an impressive charge by the Colonials women's tennis team on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 2-3, at the Georgetown Invitational.
In Flight A, Skavronskaia opened with an 8-2 victory over Ale Pedergnana of UMBC, before defeating Liddy Bartell of Georgetown, 8-2, in the quarterfinals. Skavronskaia topped freshman teammate Tracy Stecko (Lake Forest, IL), 8-0, on Sunday in the semifinals, but fell to Georgetown's Liora Gelblum, 8-5, in the finals.
Woodard, meanwhile, topped Michelle DiCocco of Georgetown, 8-5, in the semis, and cruised past Catharine Phillips of JMU in the finals, 8-3. Sophomores Anne Watkins (Naples, FL) and Mara Frisch (Tucson, AZ) each advanced to the semifinals in Flight B, but were unable to make it to the finals. Watkins fell to Georgetown's Adriann Gin, 8-5, while Mary Napier of JMU bested Frisch, 8-2, in semifinal action.
In doubles play, Woodard and Skavronskaia advanced to the finals in the top draw, but were edged by Julia Colarusso and Rachael Honig of American, 9-8. Watkins and freshman Michelle Alexander (Charlotte, NC) teamed together in Flight B, but were denied the title, 8-6, by JMU's Mary Napier and Kristin Nordstrom.
The GW women's tennis team is back in action when they travel to Norfolk, VA, for the ODU Invitational, Oct. 15-17.
