WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University men's and women's cross country teams travel to Pittsburgh, PA, on Saturday, Oct. 30, for the 2004 Atlantic 10 Cross Country Championships, hosted by Duquesne at Schenley Park. The women's 5K race is set to begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by the men's 8K race at approximately 10:45 a.m. Both squads are looking to claim their first A-10 Cross Country championships.
La Salle is the three-time defending champions on the men's side, while Richmond ended the Explorers two-year title run last year in the women's race. The La Salle men and women each enter the championships ranked No. 1 in the latest A-10 XC Coaches Poll, released Monday, Oct. 25. The GW women enter with the No. 8 ranking, while the men sit at No. 10.
The highest team finish for the Colonial men at the A-10 Championship came at the 1993 meet, held at Fort DuPont Park in Washington, DC, when host GW placed fourth out of eight teams. The following year, Eric Woronick notched the highest individual finish for the Colonials at the championships with a third-place showing in 26:03. In addition, current GW assistant coach Darrell Andruski finished sixth individually for the Colonials at the 2002 and 2003 championships.
GW also served as host of the 1997 A-10 Championships where the Colonial women recorded their best team finish with a fifth-place performance out of 11 teams amidst a downpour at Bull Run Park in Centreville, VA. One year earlier, Bridget Quenzer finished runner-up at the 1996 championship, which remains the top overall individual finish at the A-10 meet for the GW women.
Last time out, the GW women and men finished 31st and 36th, respectively, at the Penn State National meet in State College, PA, on Oct. 16. Senior Trina Bolton (Avondale Estates, GA) was the top finisher for the women's team finishing 136th in 23:09. It marked the second straight meet in which Bolton was the Colonials' top performer. Sophomore Daniel Morgan (Danville, KY) continued to lead the Colonial men as he placed 207th overall with a time of 28:12.
The GW women have five first-place finishes in six events this season, including five straight wins to start the season, while the men's squad has one first-place showing and three additional top-five finishes on the year in six meets.
