GW Names Brian Funk Assistant Cross Country Coach

WASHINGTON, DC - Brian Funk has been named assistant coach for cross country at The George Washington University, head coach Deb Cane has announced. Funk will assist Cane in the day-to-day activities for both the men's and women's cross country programs.
Funk joins the Colonials staff after spending a year as a sportswriter for the Capital-Gazette Newspapers in Annapolis, MD covering high school track and field and cross country. Prior to last year, Funk spent five years as the head coach of the University of Alabama at Birmingham's women's track and field and cross country program. At UAB, Funk produced 25 top three finishers at the Conference USA Championships and also coached the school's first NCAA cross country qualifier.
A 1993 graduate of Towson University, Funk became the youngest high school coach in Maryland history when at age 22 he was hired at Annapolis High School. While there, he helped 15 athletes qualify for national championship competition, coached 15 county champions, 20 regional champions, six state champions and one national champion.
Funk was the head graduate assistant coach for Auburn University's track and field and cross country programs and worked specifically with the men's team that finished second at the 1997 NCAA Championships.
As a competitor, Funk became the first runner in Towson history to win an individual conference title and still holds one outdoor record. He currently resides in Columbia, MD.
