FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The George Washington University Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams kicked off their spring outdoor season with strong performances this weekend, March 28 and 29, at Mary Washington College.
The women's competition was highlighted by record breaking performances in the 3,000 meter run. All four Colonial women broke the previous team mark and placed in the top six in this event. They were lead by junior Emily Jadwin (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape), who finished in second place with a time of 10:51. Jadwin was paced throughout the event by sophomore Trina Bolton (Avondale Estates, GA/The Lovett School) making her debut at this distance. Other top finishers included Cross Country MVP freshman Lindsay Blum (Holland, PA/Council Rock) and sophomore Erin Patton (Saline, MI/Saline).
An all-freshman 4 X 800 meter relay team produced a strong showing which added to the excitement of the meet. Olivia Schramm (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) led the team to a fifth place finish in a tough field. Teammates Emily Miletello (Baton Rouge, LA/Episcopal), ColleenMcCauley (Havertown, PA/Academy of Notre Dame), and anchor Meghan Dunn (Clinton, NY/Clinton) all turned in high quality early season times.
The Women's participation concluded on Saturday afternoon with senior captain Jessica Gross (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) pacing the Colonials in the 1500 meter run and sophomore Kristie Schumacher (Wrightsville, PA/Eastern York) gutting out a tough performance in the 5,000.
The Men's competition was highlighted by a winning performance from junior captain Darrell Andruski (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) in the 5,000 meter. Despite inclement weather, Andruski was able to pace the field and take first place in a time of 15:45. Fellow captain, junior Dave Azari (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury), finished a close second to Andruski.
A tornado warning unfortunately cancelled the meet prematurely and several GW runners were unable to compete in their events. The full squad looks forward to a strong showing as they return to action next Saturday, April 5, at the University of Maryland Track Invitational in College Park, Md.
