2003 NCAA Women's Basketball First and Second Rounds
Lloyd Noble Center - Norman, Okla.
Host: University of Oklahoma
Head Coach Joe McKeown
Opening Statement:
"I'm excited to be playing. We're looking forward to the match up with Villanova. Our captains have played in three NCAA Tournaments. It should be a lot of fun. We had a phenomenal crowd last night and I hope they come out to watch. I know Oklahoma is not playing, but they have great fans. It should be an exciting game to watch.
On Villanova:
"I've known Harry Perretta since he was at Bonner (Monsignor Bonner High School). He does a terrific job. Everybody talks about the Connecticut game, but what has impressed me is they've been good all year. People just didn't realize it. Juhline (Trish) and Davis (Katie) give them great leadership that carried over from last year. You could see it coming. We have our hands full, but I like my team as well. It should be a fun game. The pace that they want to play and that we want to play is very different. I think it will come down to who can control the game. The three-point line is very important to them. We will have to do a good job of defending it. "
On if a win would be a good statement for the Atlantic 10 Conference: "Once you get into the NCAA Tournament, I just look at the team we're playing, I don't focus on the conference. The fact that both conferences have schools in the same cities might add a little to it. I'm looking at it as a chance to advance to the Sweet 16 against a No. 2 seed."
On if GW has a three-prong attack:
We're an up-tempo team. We have a lot of different weapons. We don't have to depend on Cathy (Joens) and Ugo (Oha). We have six or seven people who can score."
On Villanova's lack of a post game:
"The problem is their inside game becomes an outside game. Their big kids go out and shoot and set screens and pass. Defensively, they're going to have to guard Ugo on the block and they will probably double team her. I think we have become better at adjusting to her being double teamed."
Lindsey Davidson (Senior, Guard)
On the Villanova's style of play:
"We are excited about playing. This is an important game for us."
"Execution will be extremely important for both team controlling the tempo and position of the ball will be important."
"We are very well balanced team. We can run. We can also execute and play the half court game. If we can get Villanova running for half the game I think we will be in good shape."
"Villanova has such a unique style. They really do like to play the half court game and they will attempt to play it tomorrow night. This will be a very difficult game but I think we'll adjust and take them out of the comfort zone some."
Erica Lawrence (Senior, Forward)
On the Villanova's style of play:
"I also think we are an up tempo team. We like to get out and run and transition has been our bread and butter. I think that's what we'll do tomorrow night."
"If we can get Villanova running for half the game we will be in good shape."
On inside play:
"We'll adjust and use it to our advantage."
