Women's Tennis Places Third at A-10 Championship

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington women's tennis team entered the 2002 Verizon Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championship riding a nine-match winning streak that reached 10 with a second-round 4-0 victory over Temple. The #2 seeded Colonials fell to the #3 seed, Xavier, 4-2, on Saturday to place them in the third-place match with fifth-seeded Dayton. GW shut out the Flyers, 3-0, to place third in the tournament at the Tennis Center at College Park, MD. GW completed the season with a 14-6 record under first-year GW coach Helen Andrews.
Senior captain Katarina Stastny (St. Louis, MO/ St. Joseph's Academy) closed out her college career by winning both of her singles matches at No. 4 against Temple and Xavier and appeared on her way to defeating Dayton's Christy Whalen by leading 6-3, 1-1 when play was suspended in Sunday's third-place match.
Freshman Sevla Gonca (Ankara, Turkey/Bilkent) also posted a 2-0 singles record for the tournament at No. 5 singles. Temple forfeited the No. 5 singles match in the opening round.
