WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington women's tennis team completed the regular season with a 6-1 victory over visiting Temple Saturday at GW's Mount Vernon Tennis Facility in northwest Washington. The victory was GW's ninth straight and fifth over an Atlantic 10 opponent this spring. GW improved to 12-5 while the Owls dropped to 4-11.
Temple made the Colonials' job easier by defaulting at No. 3 doubles and at Nos. 5 and 6 singles. The Owls' roster was depleted by injuries.
"It was Kat Stastny's last home match and we had a lot of support," GW coach Helen Andrews said. "She and Nazli [Gencsoy] played flawless doubles, and Kat got really pumped for her singles match, too. I feel pretty strong about next weekend (A-10s) and think we definitely have a shot at making it to the finals. Everyone is healthy and mentally strong right now."
Next up for GW is Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championships, Friday-Sunday, April 19-21, at the Tennis Center at College Park in College Park, MD. GW figures to be the tournament's No. 2 seed and will play the opening round match at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. If GW advances, it will play at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. The championship final is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.
