Chris Monroe Named To NABC District 4 First Team

WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington's Chris Monroe (Hyattsville, MD/Good Counsel H.S.) has been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) District 4 First Team. He is one of 150 men's basketball student-athletes nationwide to be selected from 15 districts. He now is eligible for the NABC/Pontiac Division I All-America Team to be announced at the conclusion of the 2001-02 season. Selected and voted on by member coaches of the NABC, the 150 student-athletes represent the finest players in the country.
Monroe, who leads GW in scoring with 21.6 points per game, was a preseason All-Atlantic 10 Conference selection. He was named the A-10 Conference co-Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 18-24.
Monroe also was named to the All-Tournament team at the NABC Classic at Kentucky Nov. 16, the tournament MVP of the Red Auerbach Colonial Classic Nov. 24 and to the all-tournament team at the BB&T Classic Dec. 3.
He is coming off his 10th career double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds against Temple Feb. 9. Earlier this season, the 6-foot-3 guard scored a game-high 34 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the Colonials' 116-102 overtime victory over Yale Nov. 24. He converted a perfect 6-for-6 free throws during the overtime period and was 15-18 (.833) from the line for the game.
Through 22 games this season, Monroe is averaging 21.8 points, 6.4 rebounds with 56 assists, 26 steals and 11 blocked shots. He is shooting 46 percent (138-303) from the field, including 48-123 (.390) from three-point range and 155-204 (.760) from the line.
GW (10-12, 3-7) plays at Xavier on Thursday, Feb. 14, in Cincinnati, OH. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m.
