WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington women's tennis team lost to American, 6-0, Sunday at GW's Mount Vernon Tennis Facility. The loss evened GW's record at 2-2 in the spring while AU improved to 1-0.
American dominated the match winning each singles match in straight sets with the exception of Nos. 4 and 5 singles. AU also swept the doubles matches.
Junior Samantha Fisher (Greenwich, CT/Benjamin School) competed for the first time since an elbow injury sidelined her last fall. Fisher, playing at No. 5, was one of only two Colonials to extend her match to a tie-break. Sevla Gonca (Ankara, Turkey/Bilkent) was the other Colonial to play beyond two sets before losing at No. 4.
"We learned a lot from this match in terms of what we need to work on," GW coach Helen Andrews said. "It's good to have Sam [Fisher] back competing for us."
Next up for the Colonials is a match against Maryland-Baltimore County, Sunday, Feb. 17, beginning at noon at the GW-Mount Vernon Tennis Facility.
