Colonials To Face UConn in BB&T Classic
WASHINGTON, DC (Sept. 19) - The George Washington University has announced its 2001-02 men's basketball schedule, which includes one nationally televised appearance and seven regional telecasts. GW's Feb. 9 game with Temple will be televised nationally on ESPN from Smith Center.
GW could play as many as eight games against teams in the 2001 NCAA Tournament including a potential match-up against crosstown rival Maryland in the BB&T Classic Dec. 3 at MCI Center. GW will play either Kentucky or Western Kentucky, either Princeton or Maryland, Providence, Charlotte, St. Joseph's, Temple and two games with Xavier. The Colonials also face four opponents from the 2001 NIT field: Connecticut, Dayton (twice), Richmond (twice) and St. Bonaventure.
Runners-up in the 2000 BB&T Classic, the Colonials will face Connecticut on Dec. 2 in the first round of the two-day tournament at MCI Center. The GW-UConn match-up holds special significance for first-year coach Karl Hobbs who spent the previous eight seasons as an assistant at Connecticut and recruited many of the current Huskies. The BB&T Classic will pit the Colonials against the Huskies while Maryland squares off against Princeton in the other opening round contest. Championship and consolation games will be played the following evening.
GW opens the regular season Nov. 15 against Marshall at the NABC Classic in Lexington, KY. The Colonials will face either Kentucky or Western Kentucky the following night at the University of Kentucky's Rupp Arena. The Colonials then travel to College Station, TX, to play Texas A&M (Nov. 19) in a rematch of last year's game at Smith Center.
GW hosts Yale in the first of 12 games at Smith Center. Yale joins Stony Brook and Binghamton in the eighth Red Auerbach Colonial Classic. The Colonials also host Boston University and Charlotte in non-conference home games.
In Atlantic 10 Conference action, GW will play a home-and-home series against West Division members Dayton, Duquesne, La Salle, Richmond and Xavier. Richmond replaces Virginia Tech in the A-10's West Division. The Colonials also host Rhode Island, St. Bonaventure and Temple at Smith Center while travelling to Fordham, Massachusetts and St. Joseph's. The 2002 Atlantic 10 Tournament will be played March 6-9 at the First Union Spectrum in Philadelphia. All quarterfinal games, both semifinal games and the championship are scheduled to be televised.
The Colonials, 14-18 in 2000-01, returns leading scorer and all-conference candidate Chris Monroe (Hyattsville, MD/Good Counsel) along with five other returning lettermen and four newcomers.
