4/20/2001 12:00:00 AM | Men's Basketball
?The University community appreciates all that Tom has done in his three years as head coach of the men?s basketball program,? said Kvancz. ?He is a class individual who has devoted more than 30 years of his life to student-athletes. He was won over 500 games and has been in many an NCAA Tournament game. However, his greatest accomplishment, in my opinion, is that he has built long and lasting relationships with his players.?
?I can?t thank the George Washington University enough ? including President Stephen Joel Trachtenberg, Vice President Bob Chernak and Jack Kvancz ? for all they have done for me and my family over the past three years,? said Penders. ?It has been a joy to work here.?
?Coach Penders has been a real gentleman,? said Trachtenberg. ?The George Washington University wishes him all good in his future endeavors.?
Penders will end his coaching tenure at GW with a 49-42 overall record, including an NCAA Tournament appearance 1999. The Colonials also reached the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Tournament in March before losing to eventual champion Temple. In 30 seasons as a college head coach, Penders has posted an overall career record of 527-361 (.593).
