WASHINGTON, DC (September 7, 2000) -- The George Washington University has announced its 2000-01 men's basketball schedule, which includes three nationally televised appearances against Xavier, Dayton and Duquesne. GW could play as many as nine games against teams in the 2000 NCAA Tournament including a potential match-up against cross-town rival Maryland in the BB&T Classic Dec. 3 at MCI Center.
GW, defending champion of the BB&T Classic, also will face St. John's coached by former GW coach Mike Jarvis on Dec. 2 in the first round of that prestigious tournament at MCI Center. The BB&T Classic will pit the Colonials against the Red Storm while Maryland squares off against Michigan in the other contest. Championship and consolation games will be played the following afternoon.
GW will open the regular season by hosting Texas A&M (on Nov. 18), the first of 14 games at Smith Center. The Colonials also host Providence, Richmond and Old Dominion in non-conference home games. Other non-conference opponents include potential match-ups with Iowa and St. Louis in the Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic in Honolulu, Dec. 28-30. GW will renew its non-conference rivalry with South Florida Nov. 28 in Tampa and UNC Charlotte Jan. 3 in North Carolina.
The Colonials, under third-year head coach Tom Penders, could play as many as five games against opponents who competed in the 2000 NIT including Xavier (twice), Massachusetts, at UNC Charlotte, and a possible match-up with Michigan in the BB&T Classic.
In Atlantic 10 Conference action, GW will play a home-and-home series against Duquesne, Fordham, Massachusetts, Temple and Xavier. GW will host La Salle, St. Bonaventure and St. Joseph's at Smith Center while travelling to Dayton and Rhode Island. The 2000 Atlantic 10 Tournament will take place March 7-10 at the First Union Spectrum in Philadelphia. All quarterfinal games, both semifinal games and the championship are scheduled to be televised.
The Colonials, 15-15 in 99-2000, return all five starters from last year's team including All-America honorable mention SirValiant Brown (Springfield, VA/Lee) and all-conference candidates Mike King (Baltimore, MD/Lake Clifton) and Chris Monroe (Hyattsville, MD/Good Counsel).
