WASHINGTON, DC (May 16, 2000) Cardinal Newman High School standout Greg Collucci has signed a national-letter-of-intent to play basketball at The George Washington University, head coach Tom Penders has announced.
Collucci, a 6-foot-3,185-pound shooting guard from Palm Beach Gardens, FL, averaged 14.3 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists as a three-year starter for Cardinal Newman High School. He is an exceptional outsider shooter whose 51 percent three-point field goal percentage led Palm Beach County last season.
Collucci played three seasons at Cardinal Newman under coach Murray Smith. The Crusaders are three-time Class 3A state champions including back-to-back titles in 1999 and 2000. He is the son of former Providence College player and assistant coach Vic Collucci and was recruited by the Friars. This past season, he was named second team All-State and first team All-Palm Beach County.
He is a fierce competitor who plays very hard, Smith said. A lot of shooters tend to just stand around on the perimeter but Greg is a good passer who can put the ball on the floor and take it to the basket and either score or make a good decision.
Greg is one of the best three-point shooting players that I have ever seen at the high school level, Penders said. The fact that he's made more than one hundred threes in each of his varsity years is a remarkable accomplishment. He's a winner who has played on two straight state championship teams. He is a fundamentally-sound, well-coached player who doesn't turn it over and doesn't make mistakes.
