Temple Coach John Chaney
[on Temple's 60% FG shooting]
"I'm shocked because as long as I've been with this team, I've never seen us shoot the ball well....Not like that...I've seen one player shoot the ball well, but it seemed like everybody who put their hands on it--I don't know what got in them. I think they should be tested."
"We went out to play a fast team and got into foul trouble early. Having one starter out who's easily the smartest player on the ballclub--Kevin Lyde is--and Lamont Barnes sitting, and Mark Karcher sitting, you wouldn't think that we could fare in a game of speed like this. But we shot the ball well, and what I think we've got to do is learn how to win the tough games without scoring well. Those are the great teams--the ones who find other ways to win."
[on the strategy for playing Val Brown]
"We tried our best to double him when we got the chance, and we tried to force him to take shots a long distance away. That's why we changed our defense to a defense where we could pick him up on the baseline a little bit better. But if you forced him to shoot outside in the seams of the zone--in the wing areas--he'd hit one and I'd get a little bit nervous. Then he'd miss one and then I felt if we kept switching around and change it, it would be somewhat unfamiliar to him. But he's one great shooter."
"I don't think GW has the kind of players that play inside and gives them the balance yet, which forces them to play up on the guards and play out on the guards. So that they have time and distance--they're looking at the time and looking at the distance they need to get it to a swing player. The kid that did that effectively was [Chris Monroe]...I wish I had him. I could trade 3 or 4 of my big guys for him. He's some kind of player!...The Washington Redskins should get ahold of him."
[on Kevin Lyde's suspension]
"Ive never heard of such a rule in my life...For somebody to call the university and tell us that somebody from down here said that he broke a rule--he's in high school and I don't know what kind of rule that is. I don't even know what high school coach or counselor or teacher would know the NCAA rules. I don't, outside of grade point average and stuff...It's something that we have to let our administrators handle."
"It hurt. And it hurt the kid at a time when he's coming home to play in front of his family. And I'm really devastated inside by it. And all my players feel the same way."
"This reporter, whoever he was, was disingenuous when he asked me to speak to my players, and I allowed him to speak to Kevin Lyde. Kevin Lyde is the kind of player who wants to play so bad, he'll tell you anything."
GW Coach Tom Penders
"To Temple's credit, late in the first half, they were knocking down 3's left and right. That was my worst nightmare, particularly [Quincy] Wadly and [Lynn] Greer, when they get it cranking."
"The good news is the other night, we beat UMass. The bad news is St. Joe's beat Temple. I knew Coach Chaney would have them focused, and that we'd have to play a great, great game to hang in there with them. We didn't have enough people today to do that, and we lost to a team that--if they're healthy and together--has a really good chance to win the whole thing this year."
"Val Brown had to work hard. There weren't a lot of open looks for him, and we knew that'd be the case. He has strep throat today and was a little weaker, which is not an excuse. He just wasn't feeling very well today. And Temple always had a guy on him."
"We needed other people to step up and have a great day against them. We just couldn't match Temple's firepower...Today they had it going. We were going to play our style of game as much as we could, but they were clicking; they were flawless...They're everything they're cracked up to be, and more."
"In the A-10, you have to go through Temple...Nobody's infallible, but you have to hope they're having an off game and you're having you're best one. Otherwise, how do you explain them losing to St. Joe's on a neutral floor."
"I told the team afterward that I've been seeing a lot of great teams getting beat by 30 points. You played hard, you gave it all you had; Temple had it going today, we didn't...You can't get down about one game. We tried to do all the things we'd been working on all week; Temple's offense was just too good today."
"I am so proud of this team, and how far they've come to win nine of our last 12 and to put ourselves in the second seed in the tournament. This team has overachieved in the regular season with all the things that have happened to us. And now I want them to relax, have some fun, and play well in the tournament. They wanted to play well for the seniors, and the crowd was great, but those kinds of things don't affect Temple."
