Lawrence Scores 16 to Lead Colonials
WASHINGTON, DC (DECEMBER 6, 2000) - Sophomore guard Erica Lawrence led four Colonials in double figures with 16 points as George Washington (4-3) was victorious over Georgetown (6-3) in a crosstown matchup.
The Colonials knew entering the game that to beat the Hoyas you have to stop GU senior guard Katie Smrcka-Duffy. Smrcka-Duffy has been the key to the Hoyas offense all season. Averaging 20.5 points a game and second on the team in assists with 27, Smrcka-Duffy is the key to the success of the team. The GW defense clamped down on Smrcka-Duffy, limiting her to 1-9 shooting and eight points on the evening. The only open looks the GU guard got were at the free throw line, shooting 6-8 for the game.
The Colonial defense was suffocating, holding the Hoyas to 37 percent shooting and forcing GU into 24 turnovers including three shotclock violations. Guards Kristeena Alexander and Corrin Reid combined for 8 of the 12 Colonials steals.
On the other side of the ball the Colonials also performed well, shooting 50 percent from the floor and dishing out 20 assists on the game. In addition to Lawrence's 16 points, Reid netted 13, Petra Dubovcova came off the bench for the second straight game to score 12, and Elena Vishniakova added 10 hard-fought points in the paint.
The Colonials will travel to South Orange, NJ this weekend to face the Seton Hall Pirates on Sunday, December 10 at 2:00 pm.
