WASHINGTON (AP) - SirValiant Brown had 32 points and Albert Roma had a career-high 16 points and career-best 10 rebounds as George Washington held off Old Dominion 91-89 on Monday.
The Monarchs (1-1) trailed 78-56 after a field goal and free throw with 5:00 left in the game by GW's Chris Monroe, who had 19 points and six rebounds for the Colonials. But ODU took advantage of poor free-throw shooting by GW (2-0) down the stretch and stormed back behind Pierre Greene, who had 19 of his team-high 24 points in the second half.
Greene's basket cut the GW lead to 86-84 with 13.4 seconds left. But Monroe and Brown hit two free throws in the final 10.6 to hold off the Monarchs, who got a 3-pointer at the buzzer from Greene.
Reserve Rasheed Wright added 16 points and Ricardo Marsh had 14 for ODU, which has not won at GW since 1992.
