WASHINGTON (AP) - SirValiant Brown, who entered the game as the top scorer in the country, had 29 points as George Washington won its first conference game with a 75-72 upset over St. Bonaventure in Atlantic 10 play Wednesday evening in the Smith Center.
Mike King, who missed six games earlier this season with a shoulder injury, had 12 points and tied his career high with 11 rebounds.
St. Bonaventure (12-4, 4-2), which has not won at GW since 1989, lost its second straight after six wins in a row. Ernest Bremer had a career-high 23 points off the bench for the Bonnies and Caswell Cyrus had 20 points, but GW held him to six points in the second half.
GW made just four of its first 16 shots but took the lead at halftime 39-28 on a barrage of three-pointers.
Early in the second half, Brown made a highlight-reel shot when he slapped in his shot while being fouled on a drive to the basket. His free throw gave the Colonials a 44-31 lead with 17:40 to play.
Tim Winn cut the lead to 56-54 for St. Bonaventure with a basket with 10:09 left to go. But GW's Bernard Barrow hit a three-pointer as the shot clock was about the expire to give the Colonials a 66-60 lead with 4:52 remaining.
St. Bonaventure could get no closer than the final score as Bremer hit a three-point shot at the buzzer.
David Capers, averaging 11.1 points per game prior to Wednesday, missed all eight shots from the field and had one point for the Bonnies.
