Harvey A. Shipman won four football letters ('46-49) at GW following nearly three years of U.S. Navy service in World War II where he attained the rank of Petty Officer. As a 6-foot-4 offensive and defensive lineman for coaches J. Neil Stahley and Bo Rowland, Shipman co-captained the Colonials in 1949. He also was designated for All-Southern Conference honors in both '48 and '49.
Born in Worcester, Mass., and graduated from Hebron (Maine) Academy in 1943, Shipman earned a bachelor's degree in history/education in '51 and a master's degree in education the following year from GW. While studying for his master's degree, he taught English and coach football at Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, Va.
After gaining his master's degree, Shipman worked for eight years ('52-60) as a special agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, where he earned 14 personal commendations for meritorious service from the FBI.
For the next three years ('60-63) he served as a presidential appointee to the Office of the Inspector General. This position let to a distinguished 25-year career in congressional affairs on Capitol Hill with Westinghouse Electric Crop. ('63-70) and Penn Central Corp. ('70-88).
Shipman, who has since passed away, and his wife, Jane, had six children and 13 grandchildren.
