Sarah Johanek is in her first year at GW and is pursuing her MPH in Global Health Program Design, Monitoring and Evaluation. She is working as a Graduate Assistant with returning varsity rowers and assisting in the recruiting process of walk-on athletes. Johanek came to GW after serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Guatemala, implementing health initiatives within school systems. A graduate of Rutgers University with a degree in Public Health and Spanish, Johanek rowed for four years and stroked the Varsity 8+ in 2019 to Rutgers’ first NCAA appearance in 18 years, earning 10th in the nation. Johanek was a member of the Under 23 National Rowing Team in 2018 and 2019. As bow seat of the 4+ in 2018, her boat captured gold at the World Championships in Poznan, Poland. In 2019, she was ranked as the top port on the U23 National team and placed 4th at World Championships in the 2-, one of the most competitive boat classes. Additionally, Johanek received First Team All-Big Ten Selection in 2017, 2018 and 2019. She made First Team All-American in 2019, received the Big 10 Medal of Honor, the conferences’ most prestigious award and was nominated for NCAA Woman of the Year.Â
