Terry Weir enters his 15th season as the head coach of George Washington's men's and women's cross country teams and at the helm of the GW men's and women's indoor and outdoor track teams.
Throughout the 2024-25 campaign, Weir led the Buff & Blue to earn five All-Conference accolades from the Atlantic 10, and guided junior Michael Bohlke to both an A-10 Championship and an NCAA Quarterfinal appearance in the 1,500M during the outdoor track season.
Throughout Weir’s tenure in Foggy Bottom, both the men’s and women’s programs have reached new heights. Most recently, the women’s cross country team has finished in the top five of the A-10 each year from 2019 to 2023, with the program claiming the Atlantic 10 title in 2021, the first in program history. The following year, the men’s program slotted a 3rd place finish in the title race in 2022, tying the program’s highest finish from 2017.
Individually, Weir has continued to coach numerous individuals to shatter numerous program and personal records.
Both the men's and women's cross country teams garnered regional rankings from the USTFCCCA at the same time for the first time in program history during the 2016 cross country season. The men's team was ranked No. 14 and the women's team at No. 12 in the October 20th Mid-Atlantic Regional Poll.
In only his second season, Weir elevated the women's cross country team to a regional ranking of No. 15 in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Mid-Atlantic Regional Poll, the first-ever regional ranking in program history. Additionally, under Weir's guidance then-senior Heather Stevens garnered Atlantic 10 All-Conference honors with a 15th-place finish at the Atlantic 10 Championships in Philadelphia, Pa. GW's 10th-place finish was the best team finish at the event since 2009.
Also in Weir's second year, the men's and women's teams combined for four top-five finishes at team events.
Weir brought 14 years of coaching experience in the DC area to GW in 2011 after serving as assistant coach for cross country and track and field at nearby American University (2002-07; 2009-11), University of Maryland (2007-09) and Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Northern Virginia (1997-99) and head coach at Oakton High School (1999-2002).
While at AU, Weir helped the men's cross country team to automatic berths in the NCAA Championships from 2004-06 defeating perennial powers Villanova and Princeton at the Mid-Atlantic Regionals along the way. The Eagles were ranked in the top 30 in the nation during those three years. The men's team also captured five consecutive Patriot League Championships from 2002-06. On the women's side, he helped lead the Eagles to Patriot League titles in 2002 and 2003.
In Weir's first year at Maryland, the Terrapin cross country and distance runners saw immediate results. Both the men's and women's 4x800m relay teams set school records as did the women's distance medley relay.
Weir began his coaching career in the Virginia high school system spending five years at Thomas Jefferson and Oaktonhigh schools. At Oakton, Weir coached 13 state champions, 2 USA Junior Track All-Americans, 1- Indoor National Champion and a World Junior XC qualifier. At Thomas Jefferson, Weir assisted head coach Matt Ryan in guiding 12 Virginia state champions, winning the 1998 women's Virginia Indoor AAA State Team Championship, women's Nike Indoor National Champions in the DMR and breaking the Virgina State Record in the women's 4x800m relay.
Weir ran professionally for the Reebok Enclave under coaches/mentors Matt Centrowitz and Frank Gagliano training for the 1996 Olympic Trials. At the University of South Alabama, Weir was the 1993 Sun Belt Cross Country Champion and Conference Runner of the year. He was a member of the All-Conference team twice and a five-time All-Conference pick in track and field.
