On Tuesday night at halftime of the GW men's basketball game vs. Rhode Island, GW student-athletes who qualified for Athletics' Dean's List were celebrated. Alongside George Washington President Ellen Granberg, Faculty Athletics Representative Kyle Levers and Athletics Director Michael Lipitz feted student-athletes who earned a 3.0 or better GPA in the spring or fall of 2025.
Of GW's nearly 400 student-athletes, 83% of the Revolutionaries earned a 3.0 grade point average or higher last semester, as the department achieved a cume 3.40 GPA in the fall, after registering a 3.43 last spring. Moreover, half of all student-athletes earned a 3.5+ GPA last semester, with 18 4.0 grade point average students among them.
Directed by Assistant Athletics Director James Hellekjaer, teamed with Natalie Ellard, Stephen McNamara and Bryn Boznanski - as well as the numerous academic tutors who work tirelessly on behalf of the athletes - Athletics continues to star in the classroom with nine-straight semesters holding a 3.25+ cume GPA.
Among GW's distinguished Faculty with their commitment to higher education for all, five in particular were cited by the university's student-athletes in their choice for Professor of the Year. Professor Scott Lancaster, Director of the Master of Accountancy Program and Accountancy Professor in the Accountancy Department in the GW School of Business, took home the top honor as POTY. Finalists included, Dr. Sarah Shomstein (Department Chair of Psychological & Brain Sciences and Cognitive Neuroscience Professor in the Psychological & Brain Sciences Department in the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences), Dr. Marie Matta (Associate Industry Professor of Decision Sciences in the Department of Decision Sciences in the GW School of Business), Dr. Jay Daigle (Teaching Assistant Professor of Mathematics in the Mathematics Department in the Columbian College of Arts & Sciences) and Dr. Holly Swanson (Teaching Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences in the Biological Sciences Department in the Columbian College of Arts & Sciences).
