Women’s Basketball Hangs Tight But Falls to A-10 Leading Rams, 79-70

WASHINGTON - On School Day at the Smith Center with 500 grade school kids in attendance, George Washington women's basketball gave the children a treat, taking a lead into the fourth quarter of play against the Rhode Island Rams, who entered the 11 a.m. tip atop the conference.
For three quarters of play, GW was the better team, holding the lead after each of the first three stanzas, until a 22-11 URI push in the fourth gave the guests the 79-70 win.
Hampered by foul trouble — Gabby Reynolds in the first half and Sara Lewis after intermission — the Revolutionaries battled through a free throw discrepancy that saw Rhode Island shoot 22 free throws to GW's eight.
Through eight lead changes and four ties, the last of which at 66-66 after an Emma Theodorsson three, George Washington took the conference's top squad to the wire. Rhode Island ran its way to the win in transition, successfully answering several Buff & Blue buckets in transition with quick baskets on the other end. Rhode Island enjoyed a 14-4 edge on the break.
Lewis led the way in defeat with 16 points in just 19:23 of play, while Jaeda Wilson (11) and Reynolds (10) also hit double figures.
Next for GW comes another tough test with the defending conference champions coming to Foggy Bottom. The George Mason Patriots visit the Smith Center on Sunday at noon on CBS Sports.
