ST. LOUIS - A 3-pointer from Robbie Avila with 3.0 seconds remaining continued the magic carpet ride for #21/22 Saint Louis as the Billikens topped George Washington, 79-76, on Tuesday night at Chaifetz Arena.
The majority of the game was controlled by the Buff & Blue, who stunned the partisan crowd while building a 15-point lead in the first half and taking a 43-33 cushion into the locker room. GW authored a 10-0 run and an 11-0 run in creating the advantage against a SLU team that had yielded just one 10-0 run all season.
GW held off multiple Billiken pushes in the beginning of the second half before the dam finally broke to the tune of a 15-0 run that saw SLU build a 70-63 lead with 5:43 remaining.
Ever resilient, George Washington rallied to take the lead on an 11-3 run via a Garrett Johnson layup with 2:39 left. Avila hit a 3 to respond but was countered by a Castro layup to tie the game at 76. GW had two chances to take the lead on contested shots in the final minute, but came up empty before Avila delivered the dagger.
Christian Jones and Tyrone Marshall Jr. led GW with 15 points a piece while Rafael Castro posted another monster stat line of 12 points, career-high 18 rebounds, four blocks and three steals. Trey Autry made four 3s in the first half and tallied 13 points.
Avila had 22 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals and was joined by Trey Green who made six 3-pointers en route to a game-high 23 points.
The Buff & Blue are back home on Saturday, welcoming Fordham to town for a 2 p.m. tip on ESPN+ and Monumental Sports Network. Saturday will be Greek Games at the Smith Center and the first 300 fans will receive a GW koozie.
