George Mason Slips By Men's Basketball Late, 69-64
1/19/2026 8:12:00 PM | Men's Basketball
FAIRFAX, Va. - After rallying from an 11-point deficit early in the second half, GW men's basketball had the reigning A-10 regular season co-champs on the ropes, but George Mason canned a critical 3-pointer with two minutes left to go ahead and eventually pulled out a 69-64 win.
George Washington utilized a 5-0 run to take a 62-60 lead with 2:21 remaining before Jahari Long made his only shot of the game in the corner to give the home team a 63-62 lead. GW had back-to-back empty possessions with chances to take the lead, but found itself down one again following a Rafael Castro dunk with 19.5 remaining.
Two more free throws from George Mason set up for another classic finish, but a miscommunication on an inbounds play after a GW timeout saw the ball sail out of bounds and seal the game for the Patriots, who improved to 18-1 (6-0 A-10).
The second-straight loss for GW (12-7, 3-3 A-10) was not without standout performances. Garrett Johnson scored 11 of the team's first 13 points and finished with a team-high 18 on 8-of-12 shooting. Castro double-doubled for the third straight game with 17 points and 12 rebounds while Trey Autry canned four 3-pointers in the second half to finish with 12 points.
Four Patriots finished in double figures, led by Riley Allenspach who tallied a double-double of its own with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
Next up for the Buff & Blue is a home date with the Richmond Spiders on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. on USA as GW looks to sweep the season series. The first 1,000 fans will receive a white t-shirt as part of the GW Whiteout presented by WMATA.
