FROM THE DESK OF MICHAEL LIPITZ

"Success is rarely simple."
Rather than open this letter with my words, I wanted to borrow from one of our own. As I hope you saw, GW Athletics alumna and women's basketball's all-time great Jonquel Jones served as Commencement Speaker on the National Mall to close the university's 2024-25 academic year, and it was with those four words that she chose to urge and root on the assembled graduates.
"While it may sound cliché, it really is the journey that makes it all worth it. That's where life happens, where you find out who you are, find people who believe in you and where you will learn lessons that will carry you through your successes and failures."
Jonquel said it best and it's with her spirit that we march ahead into 2025-26.
CELEBRATING ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

Among the graduates on the Mall, a tradition no other school in the world can claim, were 87 members of the Athletics Class of 2025. We celebrated this group at the annual Senior Honors Toast, and gathered as a department to hail our best and brightest at The Georgeys.
Truly a great time was had by all as we were reminded over the last several weeks that honoring degree recipients is one of the crowning achievements that we have the privilege to do.
After notching a 3.43 department GPA in the spring semester after the fall's 3.39, we couldn't be prouder of the 3.4+ grade point average in our department to close 2024-25. This comes on top of a 94% graduation rate and 15 GW programs with a perfect single year Academic Progress Rate of 1,000.
HYPED FOR HOOPS

Basketball tickets are now on sale for what promises to be a thrilling season of hoops in Foggy Bottom. Fresh off our winningest season and first postseason appearance since 2017, Coach Caputo and his staff have constructed a talented roster that's been widely recognized among the best in the A-10 and nationally.
Joining the talented, returning core of last year's team are five transfer student-athletes in juniors Jean Aranguren (Hofstra) and Bubu Benjamin (Tarleton State) and graduate students Tre Dinkins III (Duquesne), Luke Hunger (Northwestern) and Tyrone Marshall Jr. (Western Kentucky).
Way-too-early projections consider GW to be among the Top 60 men's basketball programs in the nation.
As for the most storied and successful program that we have, we were thrilled to bring Ganiyat Adeduntan back to GW to lead our women's basketball team. Coach G is building out her staff and roster and touts loud and proud her philosophy.
"It will be we over me. It will be mudita – an unselfish, vicarious joy not in ourselves, but in each other's success."
Season tickets for men's & women's GW basketball are now on sale. Secure your seats for what promises to be a memorable season in the Charles E. Smith Center.
CELEBRATING 50 YEARS: DECEMBER 5-6, 2025

The 2025-26 academic year marks several 50th anniversary celebrations. GW women's basketball, volleyball and rowing all debuted in 1975 and will be celebrated as such throughout their respective seasons.
The Atlantic 10 Conference was also founded 50 years ago on Ma‌rch 2, 1975 in Pittsburgh, Pa. Originally known as the Eastern Collegiate Basketball League (ECBL) or the 'Eastern 8,' George Washington is now the last original member after UMass's move to the Mid-American Conference for the '25-'26 season.
The 2026 A-10 Men's Basketball Tournament returns to the city of its founding and will be hosted at the 19,000-seat PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh.
Finally, our venerable home, the Charles E. Smith Center, was dedicated on De‌cember 6, 1975. We'll host a party 50 years in the making on Dec. 5 and Dec. 6, 2025.
Make your reservations now for a packed weekend of events including the induction of the soon-to-be-announced GW Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2025, an All-Sports Alumni Reunion for everyone who ever wore the Buff & Blue, as well as men's and women's basketball games. Save The Date!
