CHICAGO, Ill. – Behind a monster 16-point, 12-rebound double-double from Paige Mott, the George Washington women's basketball team captured its third consecutive victory, defeating Loyola Chicago, 53-41, on Wednesday night. With the win, the Buff & Blue improve to 11-13 overall and 4-9 in conference action.
GW's defense was stout early on, limiting the Ramblers to just four points in the first 10 minutes of the game on 11% shooting from the floor. The Buff & Blue jumped out to an early 14-4 advantage, fueled by five early points from Makayla Andrews. The second quarter was a carbon copy of the first as GW outscored Loyola Chicago by an identical score of 14-4 in the second 10 minutes. GW set a new season-best with just eight points allowed in the first half. The Ramblers finished the first half 3-21 (14.3%) from the floor, and 0-9 from deep. Andrews outscored the Ramblers on her own in the first half, tallying 12 points before the break.
The Ramblers didn't go out quietly in the second half, slowly chipping away at GW's lead. Loyola Chicago got within six points down the stretch, but the Buff & Blue hit clutch free throws late in the game to hold on to the victory.
Mott, a Northwestern transfer, was dominant in her return to Chicago, tallying 12 of her 16 points in the second half. She grabbed six boards in both halves and also chipped in three steals and three blocks. Andrews finished with 15 points and three assists, while first-year Gabby Reynolds added 11 points and a team-high four assists. Filipa Calisto also made an impact on the glass, grabbing nine boards and adding five points.
GW returns to the Smith Center on Saturday, hosting Dayton for the program's annual Play4Kay game. Tip-off with the Flyers is set for 2:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
