BRONX, N.Y. – Despite a solid first half that saw GW take a two-point lead into the halftime break, the George Washington women's basketball team couldn't hold on down the stretch, falling to Fordham, 61-53. GW moves to 8-7 overall and 1-3 in the Atlantic 10, while Fordham improves to 9-6 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
In a low-scoring affair for the entire first half, GW didn't trail by more than one point in the first quarter and led for the whole second frame. The Buff & Blue stretched its lead to double digits on multiple occasions in the second, securing a 22-11 lead midway through the quarter, in what would be GW's largest lead of the game. From that point on, Fordham closed the first half on an 11-2 run, closing the gap to just two points at the break.
The third quarter was a defensive battle that saw neither team give an inch. The squads traded baskets for much of the quarter, with GW leading 37-36 with under a minute to play. After a late foul on a three-pointer and a quick technical immediately following, Fordham buried five-straight free throws to take a 41-37 lead into the fourth, the team's largest lead of the day up to that point.
The Rams didn't look back in the fourth, stretching the lead to 11 midway through and outscoring GW 20-16 overall. The Revolutionaries made things interesting with a few baskets late, but it was too little too late as Fordham held on for the 61-53 matinee victory.
First-year Gabby Reynolds led the way offensively for GW, recording 14 points and grabbing four rebounds. Paige Mott just missed a double-double, finishing with 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Morgan Matthews chipped in seven for George Washington, while Maxine Engel finished with six. Taylor Donaldson led the Rams, leading all scorers with 16 points.
The Buff & Blue return to the Smith Center on Saturday, playing host to Duquesne. Tip-off against the Dukes is set for 12:00 p.m. live on ESPN+.
