An annual tradition at the George Washington University took place Tuesday afternoon, with the university honoring student-athletes who will be competing this weekend and will miss their school's commencement exercises, at a special Athletics Commencement in Betts Theatre in the University Student Center.
Four members of the baseball team, who will be away at Saint Joseph's, and seven on the women's rowing squad, who will be defending the 2023 Atlantic 10 Championship this weekend, were feted with all the pomp and circumstance of a proper Commencement ceremony. After marching into the theatre in a processional, following the National Anthem and remarks from Provost Christopher Bracey, rowing graduate student Alexa Nealy served as student speaker.
Sharing memories of her six years at GW, Nealy said it best when she remarked: "I feel optimism for what is to come, and I hope you do too."
Following Nealy's comments, in her first Commencement ceremony as the university's 19th President, Dr. Ellen Granberg charged the graduates to bring distinction to themselves and to their families following their careers in Buff & Blue.
The graduates Tuesday included baseball's Bryan Belo, Robby Wacker, Benny Wilson and Brett Young, along with rowing's Caroline Crutsinger-Perry, Yasmeen Darcazallie, Flannery Dunn, Ezi Emenike, Nealy, Celeste Noraian and Emma Reese.
Bracey captured the mood of the crowd perfectly at the close of the ceremony when he heralded, "what a great way to start off commencement season."Â
