WASHINGTON – The George Washington women's basketball team is set to host Coppin State on Tuesday evening for the team's final home non-conference game of the 2024-25 season. The contest is also GW's final home game of the 2024 calendar year, returning to the Smith Center next on January 5 to welcome Loyola Chicago for the A-10 home opener.
ANDREWS CONTINUES TO IMPRESS
Last Tuesday against George Mason, graduate transfer Makayla Andrews continued her stellar start to the 2024-25 season. In her fifth collegiate season, Andrews is leading the Buff & Blue in scoring, averaging 13.9 points a night. She's also pulling down 4.1 rebounds per game and shooting the ball at an efficient 43.8% clip from the field.
After a solid four-year career at Lafayette, Andrews landed at GW for her final year of collegiate eligibility. Andrews was a two-time All-Patriot League nominee and also joined the 1,000-point club during her senior campaign. She averages 11.7 ppg over 110 career games, and she's also recorded over 500 career rebounds at guard.
GW LOOKS TO STAY PERFECT AGAINST COPPIN STATE
The Revolutionaries hold a perfect 9-0 record against Coppin State all-time, dating back to the first meeting in 1993. That meeting in '93 was the only time GW has played on the road in the all-time series, putting up 107 points en route to a 65-point win. Since then, GW has won eight consecutive home games against Coppin State, with the most recent coming last year. The Buff & Blue topped the Eagles, 55-41, on December 9 of 2023.
GW has beaten Coppin State on average by 23.9 points per game, with the closest contest coming back in 2009. The GW Revs won by a score of 68-64, the only single-digit margin of the series. Head coach Caroline McCombs has been part of two of those victories, including the win last year and a 61-51 triumph in 2022.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
Coppin State enters the week 6-5 overall after suffering a 72-46 defeat to 16th-ranked North Carolina on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles, who recently defeated Arizona State, have played three teams inside the top 25, including defending national champion South Carolina who was the top-ranked team at the time of the matchup. Coppin State is led by third-year head coach Jermaine Woods, who holds a 26-45 overall record in three seasons with the Eagles. Woods has shown steady improvement through his first two full seasons, improving the team's win total over those seasons. In 2022-23, as a first-year head coach, Woods led the Eagles to eight wins. In his season year, the program improved with 12 victories overall. Now in his third year, Woods and the Eagles are already halfway to last year's win total with 19 games left to play.
On the court, the Eagles are paced by Laila Lawrence and Angel Jones, who currently make up 54.2% of the team's offense this season. Lawrence, who leads the team at 17.6 points per game this season, is shooting the ball at a 41.9% clip and has scored in double figures every game this season. Lawrence is also the team's leading rebounder, grabbing 9.3 per game. Jones, who is just behind at 16.0 points a night, has put up at least 20 points in four games this season and is shooting 42.7% from the floor. Both players have tallied 29 assists this season, averaging 2.6 per game.
