Women's Basketball Falls in OT to Coppin State, 64-61
12/10/2024 9:13:00 PM | Women's Basketball
In the first overtime contest for GW women's basketball since March 11, 2021, the Revolutionaries and Coppin State went an extra five minutes to determine a victor.
In a game that neither team led by more than seven at any point, late on a Tuesday night in Foggy Bottom, Maxine Engel found the bank open. Trailing by three, 54-51, with less than a minute remaining, Engel kissed the glass with a three from the right wing, knotting the score and handing possession back to Coppin State with the shot clock off in the game's waning moments. GW's defense held and had a last-second possession, but couldn't come up with the game-winner.
The extra session saw GW push ahead before Coppin State rallied, and trailing by three with possession again in the closing seconds in OT, George Washington couldn't equal Engel's success one more time.
Natalia Sierra-Vargas played the game of her GW career, serving a spark plug off the bench in a third-quarter rally after the Eagles took a six-point lead midway through the stanza. Gabby Reynolds was also big in the comeback bid, and went on to lead GW with 13 points.
After five-straight at Smith Center, GW leaves home Monday but stays in DC. The GW Revs make the short drive to American for a 7pm tip at Bender Arena.
GW fans can get in the game by directly supporting student-athletes through donations to the Buff & Blue Fund. For more information on GW Athletics, fans are encouraged to visit GWsports.com, or follow the Revolutionaries on social media through X (@GWsports) and Instagram (@gwsports).
In addition, season ticket deposits for the 2024-25 GW men's and women's basketball campaigns are currently being accepted through the GW Athletics Ticket Office (202-99-GWTIX or tickets@gwu.edu).
