WASHINGTON – Following an overtime battle with Coppin State last Tuesday, the George Washington women's basketball team stays within The District for a road test at American. The contest is set to tip at 7:00 p.m. from Bender Arena with live coverage available on ESPN+.
HOME, SWEET HOME
Monday's contest against American marks the 10th game of the season for the Revolutionaries and will be the ninth played within The District. The Buff & Blue, whose lone game outside of the DMV came on Nov. 16 against Ohio, have played seven contests at home thus far and also made a local trip to Howard earlier in the season. The program hasn't played that many games in the nation's capital before the end of December since the 2021-22 season, and it also sets a program record for most games played in DC through the first 10 contests of the year.
MOTT INCHES TOWARD 500
With nine rebounds in Tuesday's game against Coppin State, graduate forward Paige Mott inched closer to the 500-career rebound mark. The fifth-year player currently sits at 478 total boards, averaging 4.0 per game over 121 games played. Mott, a four-year player at Northwestern before arriving in Foggy Bottom, accumulated 431 rebounds during her time with the Wildcats. Her career-high came during the 2023-24 season, grabbing 20 against UIC on Nov. 9. Mott has yet to reach double-figure rebound numbers in a game for GW this season, but has already pulled down nine on three separate occasions and ranks third on the team at 5.9 per night.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
Entering the week winless on the season, American sits at 0-8 after falling 89-62 to Towson on Dec. 7. The Eagles are led by Head Coach Tiffany Coll, who's 19-50 in her three seasons at the helm. The 2003 graduate of UMBC led the program to a 10-20 season last year and finished her first season with a 9-22 mark in 2022-23. The Revolutionaries hold a narrow 17-14 lead in the all-time series, which dates back to the first meeting in 1977. Head Coach Caroline McCombs is 3-0 against American all-time, while Coll sits at 0-2.
Statistically, American is paced by Cecilia Kay, who scores 11.3 points per game. She's the only member of the program that averages double figures through the team's first eight games and also leads the squad in rebounding at 7.6 per night. Molly Driscoll is second on the team in scoring at 8.9 ppg while shooting the ball at a 41.7% clip. Laura Nogues puts in 7.1 ppg while leading the team in assists, averaging 2.8.
