St. Thomas, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS - GW men's basketball opened up the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam on Friday night with an 83-71 setback to Big 12 foe Kansas State.
GW trailed by 19 at intermission, 46-27, after shooting just 25% from the floor while the Wildcats formidable front line led the way to shooting 52% in the opening 20 minutes and opening up the double-digit advantage.
But the Revolutionaries wouldn't go down without a fight, finding their offensive rhythm after half. Jacoi Hutchinson, playing in front of nearly 20 friends and family from nearby St. Croix, led the charge with nine of his career-high 19 points in the opening six minutes of the second half before leaving the game with cramps.
Redshirt freshman Christian Jones then took the baton and spurred a 10-0 run that got GW to within four, 59-55, with 10:20 remaining following a steal and breakaway layup.
GW was not able to get any closer down the stretch, despite a significantly better offensive second half that saw them shoot 48% to finish at 36% overall. Hutchinson was joined in double figures by Rafael Castro, who tallied 12 points and six rebounds, and Gerald Drumgoole Jr. and Jones, who chipped in 10 points apiece.
K-State shot 52% on the day and had five in double figures led by David N'Guessan's 17 points and nine rebounds.
GW will face a quick turnaround with its second game in the Virgin Islands, squaring off against Louisiana on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. ET (6:30 p.m. local). The Ragin' Cajuns are 1-4 on the season and fell to Liberty, 89-69, on Friday.
