A midday matinee Wednesday brought scores of area kids and GW faculty and staff to the Smith Center to see the GW Revs host nearby rival George Mason, but much as it's gone all A-10 season for the visiting Patriots, they won by a sizable margin, 57-41, after entering play having defeated five previous A-10 foes by an average of 30.4 points per game.
Despite a defensive performance that limited their guests to a .286 field goal percentage, George Washington's own .250 mark couldn't compete. Where Mason found its success was at the charity stripe, connecting on 18-of-22 freebies, putting GW at the free throw line where the hosts had just 10 tries and six makes.
Nya Lok led GW with 16 points to draw to within four of the 1,000-point mark for her career, including her time at Midland College in Texas. Maxine Engel also hit double-figures with 10.
The star of the day was Mason's Zahirah Walton, who put up a monster double-double with 23 points and 16 rebounds, in an efficient 6-of-12 performance from the field and a sterling 10-of-10 day at the line.
GW will try to get back in the win column Saturday at Fordham in a 2 p.m. affair on ESPN+.
