Men’s Soccer Welcomes Delaware to The Vern on Tuesday, Visits UMass on Saturday

WASHINGTON - The George Washington men's soccer team (2-4-3, 0-2-0 A-10) is preparing for its next two tests of the 2023 season this week, as the Revolutionaries welcome Delaware (5-2-2, 1-2-1 CAA) to the GW Soccer Field on Tuesday (3 p.m.), before traveling to UMass (3-4-2, 0-2-0 A-10) for a league match on Saturday afternoon (1 p.m.). Both games this week will be streamed on ESPN+.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS
Delaware started the season on a six-match unbeaten streak, which included a 3-2 win at Rutgers on opening night, but is 0-2-1 in its last three matches.
Seniors Carlos Fernandez and Sam Donnellan are first and second on Delaware's points chart, out far ahead of the rest of the Blue Hens with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Fernandez sits in a tie for second in the NCAA and ranks first in the CAA with seven goals this season, while Donnellan ranks 19th in the NCAA with six goals.
GW and Delaware met for the third time-ever last season, resulting in a 2-0 Blue Hens' win in Newark, Del. The all-time series between GW and Delaware is tied at 1-1-1.
UMass is still looking for its first A-10 win of the season after suffering a 1-0 loss at Duquesne to open league play and falling in its A-10 home opener to VCU by a final score of 1-0.
Senior Alec Hughes ranks second in the NCAA and leads both UMass and the A-10 with seven goals this season, while his counterpart, senior Nick Zielonka, ranks fifth in the NCAA and first in the A-10 with six assists. No other Minutemen player has more than two points this season.
GW trails the all-time series against UMass, 11-15-3, which includes a 4-1 loss to the Minutemen last season on The Vern.
The Minutemen will host Vermont on Tuesday ahead of its matchup with the Revolutionaries.
LOOKING AHEAD
GW hosts two league matches at the GW Soccer Field next week. The Revolutionaries welcome Saint Louis to The District on Wednesday, Oct. 4, prior to hosting St. Bonaventure on The Vern on Saturday. Both matches will kick-off at 3 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
