Cross Country Opens 2023 Season in Dominant Fashion

WASHINGTON – George Washington cross country kicked-off the 2023 season in dominating fashion, posting team victories in both the men's and women's races at the Mount St. Mary's 5K Duals. The women's team tallied the second perfect score in program history, headlined by first-year Julia Shanes who tallied a time of 18:42.70 to finish in first place in her first collegiate race. Graduate student Ryan Fowkes finished with a time of 15:07.86 to also claim first place and lead GW to victory in the men's race.

NOTEWORTHY

The women's team tallied its second perfect score in program history, finishing with the top five individual finishers in the women's race. The first time GW finished with a perfect score came in 2021, also at the Mount St. Mary's 5k Duals.
First-year Julia Shanes picked up the individual win in her first collegiate race, while sophomore Una Boylan finished in second place in her collegiate debut.
The win is the women's first team victory since the opening day of the 2022 season when GW claimed first place at the Battle of the Georges hosted by George Mason.
The Revolutionaries finished with eight of the top 10 individual finishers in the women's race.
Six Revolutionaries made their GW debut in the women's race.
Graduate student Ryan Fowkes earned his first individual victory of the season, edging out UMBC's Jafar Hussen by less than a second. The race marked Fowkes' event debut in the 5K.
The win marks the first team victory for the men since taking first place at the ECU Pirate Invitational in 2022.
GW finished with six of the top 10 individual finishers in the men's race.
Senior Kevin Conlon, graduate student Lucas Brown, and senior Pierce Kapustka each tallied PRs.
Five different Revolutionaries made their event debut, while seven runners made their GW debut in the men's race.
