Cross Country Sets Sights on Navy Invitational

WASHINGTON – Following a record-breaking start to the 2023 season, the George Washington men's and women's cross country team will compete at the Navy Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 9. The event, hosted in Annapolis, Md., has a start time of 10 a.m.
LAST WEEK
During last week's season-opener at the Mount St. Mary's 5K Duals, GW put together a dominating effort both in the men's and women's races. The women, led by first-year Julia Shanes, tallied the second perfect score in program history. Shanes recorded a time of 18:42.70 to claim first place as an individual and lead GW to their historic finish. Along with Shanes, sophomore Una Boylan enjoyed immediate success in her first collegiate race, recording a time of 18:42.74 to finish second as an individual. Rounding out the remaining GW scorers was sophomore Sarah Mitchell (18:42.75), junior Olivia Syftestad (18:42.76) and first-year Lola Dinneen (18:57.92).
On the men's side, GW was led by graduate student Ryan Fowkes, who tallied a time of 15:07.86 to lead the Revolutionaries to the team title. Fowkes also claimed the individual gold in his 5K event debut. Senior Kevin Conlon (15:15.97), graduate student Lucas Brown (15:24.27) and senior Pierce Kapustka (15:50.21) all tallied 5K personal records during the race as well. Of GW's 15 men's runners, seven made their collegiate debuts and five made their 5K event debut as well.
REGIONAL RANKINGS
Both the men's and women's program found themselves ranked in the USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic preseason regional rankings prior to the start of the season. The men's team slotted into the 10th spot, while the women's program was ranked 11th. The first set of regular season polls will release later this month, with the men's rankings being published on Monday, Sept. 18, and the women's releasing on Tuesday, Sept. 19.
THE COMPETITION
The Navy Invitational, hosted at the Naval Academy Golf Club in Annapolis, Md., currently has a start time of 10 a.m. on Saturday. The women's 6K race will kick off the event, while the men's 8K run is scheduled for a tentative start time of 10:30 a.m.
Last season, Navy swept their home meet, claiming both the men's and women's team titles. GW put together a solid showing at the event, posting a fifth-place finish on the men's side and a seventh-place finish in the women's race.
