WASHINGTON – The George Washington men's and women's cross country teams unveiled its 2023 regular season schedule on Friday. The Buff and Blue are scheduled to compete in six events this season including the Atlantic 10 Championships in October and the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional in November.
"I'm excited for our cross country schedule this season as it will prep both teams to be competitively sharp for our championship races in late October and November," said head coach Terry Weir. "We return to meets GW has traditionally competed in such as the Mount St. Mary's 5K Duals and the Navy Invitational, while also competing at the Pre-Nationals for the first time in October. This will give us the opportunity to test ourselves against the best in the NCAA before competing in the A-10 Championships."
GW kicks off the regular season on Friday, Sept. 1 when it competes in the Mount St. Mary's 5K Duals. The meet, hosted in Emmitsburg, Md., is set for an 11 a.m. start time. In 2021, GW put together a dominating performance to claim both the men's and women's team titles at Mount St. Mary's. The event also marked history for the GW women as it posted the first perfect score in program history.
Also on the calendar for the Revolutionaries is the Navy Invitational (Sept. 9, 10 a.m.), the Paul Short Run (Sept. 30, 9 a.m.), and the XC23 Pre-Nationals hosted by the University of Virginia (Oct. 14, TBA). Last season, the GW women finished second out of 46 teams at the Paul Short Run. The event is hosted by Lehigh University and will be held in Bethlehem, Pa.
The Atlantic 10 Championships are slated for Saturday, Oct. 28, and will be hosted by the University of Dayton. The GW women's team claimed its first-ever A-10 Championship in 2021 and have not finished lower than fourth in the team standings each of the past four seasons. The GW men's team is coming off a third-place finish in 2022, its highest finish since 2017. The GW men will look to build off this momentum and make a push for the A-10 crown this year.
Following the A-10 Championships, GW will advance to the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional hosted by Lehigh University on Friday, Nov. 10 at 11 a.m. Teams that finish in the top two in both the men's and women's regional earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Championships. Along with that, the top four individual placers not from an auto-bid team will also punch their ticket into the championship race. Following the regional, 13 additional men's and women's teams will be selected by the NCAA DI Cross Country Subcommittee to receive an at-large bid. The 2023 NCAA Championships are slated for Saturday, Nov. 18, and will be hosted in Charlottesville, Va.
