WASHINGTON - GW men's soccer (0-0-1, 0-0-0) is on to its second test of the regular season, when it visits Gaelic Park in Riverdale, N.Y., to face the Manhattan College Jaspers (0-0-1, 0-0-0 MAAC) on Monday, Aug. 28. Kickoff between the Revolutionaries and Jaspers is scheduled for 1 p.m.
OPENING NIGHT VS ODU
There were new faces all around for GW on Thursday night, with 11 Revolutionaries making their GW debuts at the ODU Soccer Complex. Led by first-half goal-scorers Will Turner and Ben Hissrich, GW held a 2-0 advantage at halftime, but Old Dominion found two goals of its own in the second half, which left the Revolutionaries to settle for a 2-2 draw to start the 2023 campaign.
The visitors settled into the opener quickly and found themselves ahead at halftime. Hissrich opened the scoring in the 36th minute after Turner, who did well to beat two Monarch defenders, found Hissrich open at the top of the box, who fired a one-time shot past the Monarchs' goalkeeper. Then just seconds before the halftime whistle, Turner connected on a set piece and headed the ball in for GW's second goal. Junior Sean Vaghedi sent in the cross and was credited with an assist on the goal.
The first half was packed with milestone moments - both Hissrich and Turner picked up their first career goals at GW, while Turner and Vaghedi secured their first career assists in the Buff and Blue.
The Monarchs cut the GW lead in half in the 49th minute on a penalty kick, and later tied the match in the 69th minute on a headed cross.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
The Jaspers enter Monday's competition after a 1-1 draw against Holy Cross in their season opener. Both goals in Manhattan's first match came from penalty kicks, so the Jaspers are still looking for their first live-action goal of the season.
Manhattan was picked to finish third in the 2023 MAAC preseason poll after finishing last season at 8-5-6, with a 5-1-4 mark in conference. The Jaspers earned a trip to the MAAC Semifinal in 2022, where they fell in a 1-0 match to Iona.
The Jaspers return their top-two point scorers from 2022 - Gunnar Studenhofft (5 goals, 5 assists) and Henry Hamilton (6 goals, 2 assists). Hamilton, a sophomore from New Zealand, scored the penalty kick for Manhattan in its season opener.
GW is 2-0-0 all-time against the Jaspers, which includes a 4-2 win last season at the GW Soccer Field. Both sides return one goal scorer from last year's match, in the form of Hamilton for Manhattan and Tim Neumann for GW.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Revolutionaries return to The Vern on Saturday, Sept. 2, for the home opener against Iona. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. and the match will be streamed on ESPN+.
