Women's Basketball Takes Down Crosstown Foe Howard, 64-58
11/6/2023 8:22:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Showing the defensive prowess that threatens to challenge the top of the Atlantic 10 for conference supremacy this season, the GW women's basketball team shut down Howard Monday in the season-opener to take a 64-48 home win, by virtue of a defensive performance that held the Bison to a .298 field goal percentage.
Despite the stellar D by GW, Howard hung tight, getting as close as 47-46 in the fourth quarter after the Revolutionaries held a 17-point first half lead. After Howard got within one in the fourth, the GW defense came through again. Howard missed all five three-point tries in the final stanza, and shot just .235 in the last frame, securing the wire-to-wire win for the Buff & Blue.
Offensively, it was the Nya Robertson show for GW as the reigning A-10 Sixth Woman of the Year was up to her old tricks. Shooting over the top of the Howard zone, Robertson canned a career-high and program-record tying eight three-pointers, the last of which was of the step-back variety, cashing a triple at the third quarter buzzer to send GDUB into the fourth leading 47-43. Robertson finished with a career-high 29 points to lead all scorers, registering all of her made field goals from behind the arc, while canning 5-of-6 tries at the charity stripe.
The grad student pair of Nya Lok and Essence Brown were crucial in the victory, both going 5-of-10 from the field to join Robertson in double figures. Lok (12 points) also pulled down seven rounds, while Brown (11 points) had six boards. Grad student Mayowa Taiwo's presence was also felt inside, finishing the contest with seven rebounds. Seven boards gives Taiwo 800 for her career, just the ninth player in program history to achieve the feat.
Boston University transfer Maren Durant showed out in her Buff & Blue debut. Playing stout on the inside, she finished with a team-high eight rebounds, none bigger than the final board of the game with :18 to play. After Howard chose not to foul, victory was secured for GW. Durant also tied with Brown for team-best honors with two blocks.
Up next for the Revolutionaries is a Friday date with Manhattan at 6 p.m., where the Buff & Blue will look to continue their stingy defense in the Empire State. The contest will be carried live on ESPN+.
