BRONX, N.Y. – Despite falling behind by as many as 12 points in the first quarter, the George Washington women's basketball team picked up a resilient 55-49 win over Manhattan on Friday night. The win moves the Revolutionaries to 2-0 on the young season and gives them their first road victory of the year.
The Buff & Blue were led by grad student Madison Buford, who tallied a game-high 20 points, including seven points in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Nya Robertson registered 10 points, seven of which came in the second half. GW also saw production from grad students Essence Brown (eight points) and Faith Blethen (six points) en route to victory.
In the first road game of the season, GW got off to a slow start, falling behind by 12 in the opening period and trailing 19-10 after the first quarter. GW's stout defense held the Jaspers to just seven points in the second quarter, cutting the Manhattan lead down to 26-20 at halftime. GW's outstanding defense continued in the second half, limiting Manhattan to just seven points again in the third period. Over the second and third quarter, GW outscored the Jaspers 28-14 and carried a 38-33 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
With GW clinging to a 46-42 lead with under two minutes to go in the game, Blethen knocked down a clutch triple to give the Revolutionaries a seven-point advantage. Blethen's clutch bucket was her second 3-pointer of the night and her first two of the season. Following Blethen's three, grad students Mayowa Taiwo and Buford each stepped to the line and knocked down a pair of free throws to fend off the surging Jaspers. GW finished 10-for-12 (83.3%) from the line on the day, showing poise down the stretch to seal the win. GW eventually secured the win off a nicely designed out-of-bounds play that freed Buford up for a wide-open layup, capping off her 20-point performance and giving GW its second-straight win.
The victory keeps GW undefeated on the short season, the first time the Buff & Blue have started 2-0 since 2020-21. The Revolutionaries will put their unblemished record on the line Wednesday when they host American inside the Smith Center. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. with coverage carried live on ESPN+.
