Women's Basketball Stumps St. Bonaventure, 56-43
1/8/2023 4:17:00 PM | Women's Basketball
OLEAN, N.Y. – On a chilly afternoon in western New York, George Washington women's basketball made sure that the St. Bonaventure attack was as cold as the weather. GW's defense held the Bonnies to just 17 second half points and a 29 percent shooting clip overall in a 53-46 road win.
For much of Sunday's action, offense was in short supply. Both teams shot below 40 percent in the opening frame, and while GW only managed to hit seven shots in the first 10 minutes, a pair of clutch threes by Asjah Inniss and Nya Robertson staked them to a 16-11 lead after one.
In the second quarter, Bona's offense broke through for its best stretch of Sunday's game. The Bonnies scored 15 of their 43 points during the second frame and were able to chip the lead down to 33-26 entering halftime.
After halftime, GDUB's offense looked on its way to a disappointing second half showing, as the team hit just two of its 16 shot attempts. However, Coach McCombs' trademark defense prevented the Bonnies from getting into a rhythm, holding them to just 3-of-14 shooting and eight total points.
Finally, after three quarters of defensive basketball, GW's attack finally broke through in the last stanza. The Colonials pocketed 17 fourth quarter points, including three 3-pointers, to polish off the victory.
Individually, Mayowa Taiwo was a force on both ends of the court, recording a 14-point, 15-rebound double-double. Robertson also turned in a strong performance with a game-high 17 points.
Up next, GW will return home for a Wednesday afternoon matinee against Fordham University. Tip-off between the Colonials and the Rams is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. with live coverage available on ESPN+.
