Colonials pick up first conference win over Fordham since 2017
WASHINGTON – In search of its first win in six years over A-10 rival Fordham, George Washington women's basketball rose to the occasion on Wednesday afternoon at the Smith Center. Fueled by 23 points from Nya Robertson and lockdown second half defense, GW downed the Rams for its third conference win of the season, 63-57.
Back at home for its lone game during a 14-day stretch, GW and the Rams treated fans to an exciting opening half. The two sides battled back-and-forth over the opening 20 minutes, exchanging six lead changes, with neither team getting a lead larger than five. While the Rams owned the better shooting percentage in the first half (49 percent), timely scoring by the Colonials allowed them to head into halftime tied at 29.
After the half, GW's defense came out ready to make a statement. The Colonials held the high-powered Fordham offense to just a 13 percent field goal percentage in the third quarter, with just seven total points from leading scorers Anna DeWolfe and Asiah Dingle.
In the final 10 minutes, GW's defense continued to sparkle. The team held DeWolfe scoreless throughout the fourth quarter and while Fordham was able to sink a pair of late threes to close the gap to two, George Washington withstood the late comeback attempt and pulled out the win.
For the game, George Washington held the Rams' talented attack to just 57 points, tied for its season-low, and held both DeWolfe (15 points) and Dingle (18 points) below their season averages.
Individually, Robertson helped pace GW's attack with 23 points, including 18 in the second half. The A-10's rookie leader in scoring now has three games with at least 20 points this year. Mayowa Taiwo (10 points, 11 rebounds) and Mia Lakstigala (14 points, 10 rebounds) also turned in superb efforts in the victory.
Up next, George Washington will begin a stretch of two road games in three days. GW will tip off its busy weekend on Saturday at La Salle before heading to George Mason on Monday for MLK Day. Saturday's tip in Philly is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. with live coverage available on ESPN+.
