Three GW scorers reach double figures on Monday afternoon
FAIRFAX, Va. – George Washington women's basketball was able to whittle a 20-point deficit down to as little as eight in the fourth quarter, but it was ultimately unable to complete the comeback in its 67-57 loss to George Mason on Monday.
George Mason proved to be a handful from the opening tip of Monday's MLK Day matinee, shooting an impressive 61 percent in the opening frame. However, GW was able to keep up in the first quarter by burying seven of its first 15 shots and the two teams went into the second stanza tied at 17.
The second quarter was where the game flipped. GW shot a game-low 28 percent from the field while Mason continued to shoot the lights out. The Patriots used a 12-2 run and a 50 percent shooting percentage to take a 35-30 lead into halftime.
Following halftime, Mason's offense came out even more potent. The Patriots shot an incredible 76 percent from the floor in the third quarter, including a perfect 3-of-3 from downtown, and pushed the lead all the way up to a game-high 20 points late in the frame.
In the final frame GDUB finally regained its offensive footing. The Colonials buried six shots in the final ten minutes, but they were never able to completely close the gap and George Mason pocketed the win.
Individually, Mayowa Taiwo scored 10 points and had 11 rebounds for her sixth double-double, while Mia Lakstigala led the team with 14 points and Nya Lok chipped in 12 points.
Up next, George Washington will have a few days off before returning to the court on Sunday, Jan. 22 against VCU. Tip-off between the Colonials and the Rams is scheduled for noon with coverage available on NBC Sports Washington.
