First-year Alex Nicholson scores first GW goal
WASHINGTON - Alex Nicholson tallied his first career goal in Buff & Blue, but GW men's soccer fell to Mount St. Mary's, 2-1, in a Labor Day tilt on the Mount Vernon Campus.
After falling behind 2-0, the Colonials halved their deficit on Nicholson's successful right footed strike in the 67th minute. They continued to press the Mountaineers' defense, but couldn't find the equalizer in the closing minutes.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
8th minute: The Mountaineers struck first thanks to a header by Ruben Kiers that just rolled by the outstretched hands of GW keeper Justin Grady. Kiers was set up off a cross from teammate Jesus Salazar.
51st minute: For the second time on Monday, the combination of Kiers and Salazar struck paydirt for The Mount. Salazar found the head of his teammate again off of a corner kick, and Kiers deposited his header into the right hand corner of the net for his second of the game.
59th minute: GW was awarded a penalty following a hard tackle in the penalty area on Tiago Carvalho. However, Mountaineers' goalkeeper Ethan Russell was able to make a diving save to his left to keep George Washington off the scoresheet.
67th minute: The Buff & Blue found its first goal thanks to the right foot of Nicholson. Nicholson stole the ball from the Mountaineers' backline and slotted it past Russell with a well-placed strike.
NOTEWORTHY:
• GW was able to generate offense throughout Monday's contest, outshooting Mount St. Mary's, 15-11, and registering nine corners to the Mountaineers' five.
• Carvalho and senior Roee Tenne led the Buff & Blue offense with three shots apiece.
• Grady made a season-high four saves on 11 shots.
UP NEXT:
George Washington will return to action on Friday, Sept. 9 when it heads to Annapolis to face Navy. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
