Reigning A-10 Champions look to repeat in 2022
NEWPORT, Va. - The Atlantic 10 conference announced its preseason poll for the 2022 cross country season on Tuesday afternoon. The George Washington women's cross country team, which captured its first A-10 title last fall, was picked third in this year's poll, while the men's program was tabbed to finish seventh.
Last year, the women's team won the championship with 50 points, finishing 25 points better than the next closest team. GW also had four All-Conference performers, including sophomore returner Olivia Syftestad.
In this year's poll, GW led all teams with five first-place votes. However, they were selected third behind Loyola Chicago, who tallied 190 points, and Dayton, who received 186 points. Loyola Chicago arrives for its first season in the A-10 fresh off of capturing its third-straight Missouri Valley Conference championship.
On the men's side, George Washington came in seventh overall, while tallying two first place votes. In 2021, the men's program finished seventh in the A-10, besting its preseason prediction of ninth overall.
Both the women's and men's programs will get underway this Thursday at the Battle of the Georges, hosted by George Mason. The first race is set to begin at 4 p.m. in Culpepper, Va.
