Colonials will look to win five games in five days en route to A-10 Conference title
WASHINGTON - Following a regular season that saw George Washington women's basketball become the No. 12 seed in the Atlantic 10 Championship, GW will begin tournament play this Wednesday when it faces off with St. Bonaventure. Live coverage of GW's opening match-up from Wilmington, Del. is available at 1:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
HELLO AGAIN:
Wednesday will mark the third time this season that GW and St. Bonaventure go head-to-head. The A-10 rivals split the prior two meetings, with St. Bonaventure earning a 50-49 victory in Olean, N.Y., and the Buff & Blue winning 60-47 at the Smith Center.
In the first game, the Colonials were undone by a pair of late free throws from Asianae Johnson. Despite the loss, GW had its best field goal shooting game of the season in Olean, N.Y., shooting at a 42 percent clip. GW's first contest against Bona also marked the emergence of Maxine Engel, who played a key role for GW down the stretch. The first-year scored a career-high 19 points against the Bonnies.
In the second contest, GW got revenge thanks to an electric fourth quarter comeback. GW was outscored in each of the first three quarters, but the team connected on 9-of-14 field goal attempts in the final frame, including 4-of-8 from deep, to overcome an 11-point deficit to secure the 13-point win.
BEST OF THE (DEFENSIVE) BEST:
When Coach McCombs' was hired this season, she preached defensive success. After 28 regular season games the Colonials not only showed their might on D, but the 2021-22 iteration can stake claim to being the best defensive team in GW history. The Buff & Blue limited its opponent to just 55.5 points per game, tied with the 1996-97 Colonials for the lowest season average in team history. Additionally, GW ends the regular season ranked in the top-25 nationally in scoring defense and the top-five in the A-10 in field goal percentage defense.
A-10 TOURNAMENT HISTORY:
The Colonials are 45-32 all-time in 39 A-10 Championships and have won seven tournament titles, with the last coming in 2018. The Buff & Blue are 2-0 all-time against St. Bonaventure in the A-10 Championship. However, the two sides have not faced each other in postseason play since 1995.
UP NEXT:
The winner of Wednesday's matchup moves on to the second round of the A-10 Championship on Thursday against No. 5 seed La Salle. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on ESPN+. The complete A-10 Championship bracket can be found here.
