Haynes Brown scored twice in victory
WASHINGTON - Led by a pair of goals from Oscar Haynes Brown, GW men's soccer opened its season in style Thursday afternoon with a dominant 4-0 win over VMI in front of an enthusiastic home crowd on the Mount Vernon Campus.
Haynes Brown set the tone with a score 66 seconds into the game and later added a second goal exactly two minutes after the halftime break. Nico Krueger and Carlyle Smart also found the net in the victory that improved the Buff and Blue to 1-0 for the second straight year and third time in four seasons.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 2nd Minute: Ryan Cedeno's cross skipped past a defender and found Haynes Brown's foot in front to give the Buff and Blue an early lead. (GW 1, VMI 0)
- 32nd Minute: Another Cedeno cross turned into a goal. This time, Krueger headed home the service to extend the lead. (GW 2, VMI 0)
- 47th Minute: Haynes Brown struck again, working a give-and-go with Elias Norris before using a nifty touch to clear space for a shot in front of the net. (GW 3, VMI 0)
- 68th Minute: Smart finished the scoring with his first career goal off a feed from Tom Cooklin. (GW 4, VMI 0)
NOTEWORTHY
- A two-time All-Conference forward, Haynes Brown looked the part with his 23rd and 24th career goals. The London, England, native now has 53 career points in 35 career games.
- Haynes Brown has shown a knack for starting the season on the right foot in front of the home crowd. He has scored in each of the four season openers on the Mount Vernon Campus in which he has played, totaling seven goals in those contests.
- Cedeno picked up the first two assists of his career.
- A first-year from Philadelphia, Krueger came off the bench to score in his collegiate debut.
- Smart tallied his first goal and first points in his 20th career appearance in Buff and Blue.
- After leading the club with five helpers in the spring, Cooklin landed his first assist of the season in the opener.
- Justin Grady needed to make just one save to collect his ninth career clean sheet.
- GW put 10 of its 19 shots on goal and outshot the Keydets 19-3 overall.
- The Buff and Blue showcased their depth with 21 different student-athletes seeing action in the contest.
