Emson scored first goal of season vs. Bison
WASHINGTON - GW men's soccer opened its road slate on Monday evening, battling Howard to a 1-1 draw at Greene Stadium.
With the Buff and Blue down late in regulation, Liam Emson came through with his first goal of the season to force overtime, and despite a continued push from the visitors, the crosstown matchup ended in a stalemate after 20 minutes of scoreless extra time.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 23rd Minute: Bryson Baker shook free from the defense to put the home team in front in the early going. (Howard 1, GW 0)
- 88th Minute: Emson came up clutch late, heading home a beautiful cross from Tom Cooklin for the equalizer. (GW 1, Howard 1)
NOTEWORTHY
- Emson's goal was the third of his career. The junior forward now has eight points as a member of the Buff and Blue.
- A junior midfielder, Cooklin has three assists through two games this season and eight helpers in his past nine outings dating back to the spring campaign.
- GW generated plenty of chances with 26 shots in the game, including nine attempts in overtime. The Buff and Blue kept the pressure on til the final whistle with five tries in the final 5:04 of double overtime. They put 13 shots on target in all and forced Howard keeper Emory Simon to make 10 saves.
- Oscar Haynes Brown and Sandro Weber tied for the game high with five shot attempts apiece.
- GW keeper Justin Grady made all of his season-high four saves in the opening half. Howard managed just two shots, with none on goal, after the halftime break.
UP NEXT: GW is back on the road Friday, visiting Columbia for a 1 p.m. start. The Buff and Blue return to the Mount Vernon Campus on Sept. 7 to face Liberty on home turf.
