Buff and Blue open the regular season at Elon on Aug. 19
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The George Washington women's soccer team was selected to finish fourth out of 14 teams in the 2021 Atlantic 10 preseason poll, the league announced on Thursday.
GW tallied 145 points to secure the fourth spot based on ranking projections from the A-10 head coaches. Reigning conference champion Saint Louis topped the poll for the second consecutive season. Dayton and VCU took home the second and third spots, respectively.
GW returns six starters from last season's squad that posted a 6-4-1 overall record and went 4-3-1 in conference play.
Among those returning is junior Tori Minda, who put together a career-best season in the spring with five goals, including game-winning scores vs. VCU (4/1) and George Mason (4/4). The Garden City, N.Y., native finished the season with a team-high 32 shots, putting 16 on net.
Captain Kelly Amador returns to the pitch as a graduate student and will be a key component to GW's midfield and defense. The veteran tallied an assist last season while totaling 1,036 minutes of action.
Tamaki Machi returns between the pipes for the Buff and Blue after tying her career-high with five shutouts last season. Machi finished the regular season second in the A-10 with 57 saves and a 1.10 GAA, good enough for sixth in the conference.
Eleven new faces join the program this fall, including two graduate transfers and nine first-years.
GW is scheduled to open up the regular season at Elon on Aug. 19, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. The Buff and Blue will make their 2021 home debut on Aug. 26 at 5:30 p.m., when they host UNC Greensboro.
